Council seeks views on 20mph limit for valley lanes

Residents are being asked to have their say on a plan to introduce a 20mph limit across much of central Middlemark and on the narrow approach to Larkbourne Valley School, where parents have long complained about traffic at the gates.

The consultation follows a spate of near-misses on the blind bend by the bridge, and a petition gathered over the summer outside the market. The council stresses that nothing is settled, and that it wants to hear from drivers as well as walkers and cyclists.

What is being proposed

The draft scheme would cover:

  • All residential streets within the old town boundary
  • The full length of the school approach, including drop-off hours
  • The stretch of the valley road between the bridge and the market cross

Supporters argue that slower traffic on such tight lanes is common sense. Critics counter that limits mean little without enforcement, and that the money might be better spent on a proper crossing by the school.

The consultation runs for six weeks. Comment forms are available at the library and the parish office, and responses can also be sent by email. The council has promised to publish a summary of every response, anonymised, before it makes a decision.
